Laerskool Voorwaarts
Details
Laerskool Voorwaarts is a primary school situated on 224 Jan Neethling Street, Chrissiesfontein, Meyerton.
We hold an annual open day that parents and children can come and attend. Come and meet our teachers and visit our school to see for yourself what we are all about and who we are. Everyone is very welcome.
The school started in 1924 and was opened at the time by a Mr Van der Twisk (headmaster). The old school building still stands today. These are two sandstone buildings on Jim Fouché road.
The school became too full and many pupils had to drive far to get to school. In the 1930s the school was moved to buildings in the Slangfontein area.
The numbers grew and it was decided to split the school. One group went to town and later became the old L/S Dr Verwoerd (currently L/S Midvaal). The other part moved to riversdal to the old school building where the present "Eagles Wings" resort is. Our school still had an English name but our children went to Afrikaans school. Riversdal Government Primary School.
The school was never considered part of the Meyerton schools. Because the school was on the "East side" of the Klirivier, the school was part of the Heidelberg circuit. It was not until 1963 that the school was incorporated into Meyerton and a few years later, in 1965, the school's name was changed to Laerskool Voorwaarts.
The current building was completed at the end of 1969 and was put into use in 1970. The headmaster who managed the trek was Mr Jack Ellis.
The school produced Springbok sports stars. The more famous are Irene van Dyk (Netball) and Johan le Roux (Rugby). Johan le Roux will perhaps be better remembered as the man who bit the All Black captain, Shaun Fitzpatrick's ear at the time.
