Membrane filtration like Ultrafiltration (UF) and Microfiltration (MF) has not been the first choice of filtration in the past because of its high cost and the unfamiliarity of operating the system. This has changed in recent days, since new membrane technology now have a lower cost compared to conventional filtration systems, it is simpler to operate and maintain and higher quality permeate (in terms of microorganism removal) can be achieved than with conventional filtration methods
